Travel Photo Thursday

I'm posting over at The Budget Travelers' Sandbox.

November 2010 - Istanbul Turkey

Last week I posted photos from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. This week we're going to the Spice Market and I'll feature some foodie photos.

The Spice Bazaar, (Turkish: 'Mısır Çarşısı', or Egyptian Bazaar) in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the largest bazaars in the city. Located in Fatih, in the neighborhood of Eminönü, it is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar.

There are several documents suggesting the name of the bazaar was first "New Bazaar". The building was endowed to the foundation of the New Mosque, and got its name ("Egyptian Bazaar", Turkish: Mısır Çarşısı) because it was built with the revenues from Egypt The word mısır has a double meaning in Turkish: "Egypt" and "maize". This is why sometimes the name is wrongly translated as "Corn Bazaar". The bazaar was (and still is) the center for spice trade in Istanbul, but in the last years more and more shops of other types are replacing the spice shops.

  1. I visited both bazaars a few years ago for the first time. Loved the colors and textures ... the crowds ... not so much. Next time, I'll get there early in the morning.
