September 2015 - Bantry Bay Ireland

Finally time for a walk!! I'm going to take you around Bantry Bay.

Famous in song, Bantry in West Cork Ireland is of legendary beauty. Bantry, at the head of the bay, is a busy market town and fishing port. Bantry located at the mouth of Bantry Bay, was twice entered by French fleets in 1689 to support James II against William of Orange, in 1796 to aid Wolfe Tone and an Irish uprising. A storm dispersed the 1796 fleet and few of the ships made the Bay.

It won't be a long walk today, we stopped for coffee and to stretch our legs.

A little history.

Theobald Wolfe Tone, posthumously known as Wolfe Tone (20 June 1763 – 19 November 1798), was a leading Irish revolutionary figure and one of the founding members of the United Irishmen and is regarded as the father of Irish republicanism. He was captured by British forces at Lough Swilly in Donegal and taken prisoner. Before he was to be executed, it is believed that Wolfe Tone attempted suicide. He subsequently died from mortal wounds eight days afterwards, thus avoiding being hanged as a convicted traitor to the British Crown for his involvement in the 1798 Irish Rebellion.
