Michelle Wu, the incumbent mayor of Boston, ran unopposed in the 2025 mayoral election after her main opponent, Josh Kraft, withdrew from the race following the preliminary election in September. Wu had won the preliminary with about 72% of the vote, while Kraft received about 23%. Kraft's withdrawal left Wu as the only candidate on the November general election ballot, making her the first Boston mayor to run unopposed in a general election since 1997. Wu subsequently secured her second term as mayor easily.

Mary Sheffield is the mayor-elect of Detroit, having won the November 4, 2025 election with about 77% of the vote, making her the first woman to serve as Detroit's mayor. Sheffield, 38, has served on the Detroit City Council since 2014 and became its president in 2022, the youngest ever in that role. She ran as a "people’s champion" and has a history of focusing on community issues such as gun violence, infrastructure, housing, and transit. Sheffield is known for advocating increased funding for community violence intervention and mental health resources and plans to focus on rebuilding neighborhoods, creating jobs, and poverty alleviation in her administration.

Historic Women

Tom the backroads traveller hosts this weekly meme.

Ottawa Famous Five

The "Women are Persons!" sculpture in Ottawa commemorates their successful 1929 "Persons Case," which ruled women were "persons" under the law and eligible for appointment to the Senate. The sculpture, created by Barbara Paterson, is located near the Senate of Canada Building on the Plaza Bridge.

The Famous Five were five Alberta women—Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, and Irene Parlby—who brought the "Persons Case" to legal challenge in Canada. They are famous for their successful fight to have women legally recognized as "persons" under the British North America Act, which opened the door for women to be appointed to the Senate and advanced gender equality in Canada.

There is also a Famous Five sculpture in Calgary Alberta.

Emily Murphy: A judge and activist who was the leader of the Famous Five.
Henrietta Muir Edwards: A women's rights advocate who worked with the National Council of Women.
Nellie McClung: A novelist, teacher, and suffragist who served in the Alberta Legislature.
Louise McKinney: A social reformer and the first woman elected to the Alberta Legislature.
Irene Parlby: A farmer's wife and the first female cabinet minister in Alberta.

The Persons Case
In 1927, the five women asked the Supreme Court of Canada if women could be appointed to the Senate.
The Supreme Court ruled that the word "person" in the British North America Act did not include women.
Undeterred, the Famous Five appealed the decision to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London, England, which was then Canada's highest court of appeal.
On October 18, 1929, the Privy Council overturned the Supreme Court's ruling and declared that women were "persons" under the

Kash Patel in 2023: “I’m just saying Chris Wray doesn’t need a government funded G5 jet to go to vacations. Maybe we ground that plane. $15,000 every time it takes off. Just a thought.”

Historic Women

Mary ‘May’ McGee: The dignified Irish mother who took on the might of the State and became a feminist icon died October 28, 2025.

It was 1970's Ireland. May McGee was 27. She had four pregnancies, had strokes on three of them, suffered paralysis and a cerebral haemorrhage. Partially deaf, living in a mobile home in Skerries with her fisherman husband Seamus, her doctor, a good man, said another pregnancy could kill her. He advised a diaphragm and spermicidal jelly.

May’s stuff was seized by Customs. She and Seamus was denounced from the altar: ‘Certain people in this parish have brought the church into disrepute’ She left, and never went back.

She was furious. How dare they! Mary Robinson agreed to take her case. Mary Robinson would become Ireland's first female president.

First the High Court threw May’s case out. Then the Supreme Court came down in favour, 4 to 1.

A landmark case. It took another four million years before ‘normal people’ could get what they needed, without prescription, or a letter from the Pope, to protect against pregnancy.

Contraception on demand! did you ever hear the like?! ‘ A terrible waste of male seed!’ Why couldn’t the young couple live as ‘brother and sister?’.

May, and Seamus, did us all an enormous favour. They breached the steely grip of the Church, backed by the State. They showed it was possible for ‘ordinary’ people to take them on, and win.

And just in case you’ve forgotten the depths of hypocrisy our very own Taliban sank to, while May was fighting for freedom to choose, 78 priests in Blackrock College were raping little boys, while nuns in ‘Mother and Baby Homes’ and Magdalene Laundries were terrorising young pregnant girls, dumping their dead babies in septic tanks or open fields, or selling them, for handsome profits, to America.

Ah yes, the good old days

SATURDAY

I was busy on my laptop when I spotted this sunrise out of the corner of my eye!

And this!

We decided on a do nothing day, even though we did some stuff.
My Christmas cactus looks like she is getting ready to flower!

John finally brought my bracelet up from the car that my BFF had restrung for me! She did  a great job.

Still on a high from last night's win!
Enjoy this beautiful Indigenous Blue Jays logo (made by Kory Parkin/@paintsbyparkin)

It was bound to happen...

SUNDAY

Gardiner Expressway from Spadina Avenue to Highway 427 closed until Monday, at least they waited until the game was over to close it.

MONDAY

John went to golf and had a 45 minute delay due to to frost warning.

I went downtown and we flew into and out of the downtown area!!

A new opening in FCP, and they look good!!

Kind of weird, I was waiting for the elevator with another woman who had a grocery cart, we got on when suddenly someone pushed another cart on, I realized he lived on my floor and he said "could you take my cart", he had another cart. Startled as was the other woman, I took it and left it in the hall. He later stuck a thank you note in our door. Now I know his name and what his business is LOL.

I prepped a small batch of maple scones for baking in the morning.

What a ball game! We lasted until 1 AM.

I would add that it started at 8 PM EST and ended at 3 AM!
18 innings is 2 games!!!

TUESDAY

John met a friend for breakfast and then golf. I popped into the $ store for a couple of things.
Union Station.

Baseball fever is everywhere.

Then chatted with T for a while.
I got this in the mail!!!

More baseball madness! And it was mad as we won in LA!!!

WEDNESDAY

We spent the day arranging a trip for end of November, finalizing/paying the first part with a tour.

I made more scones to bake in the morning. I'm going to have to make multiple batches at a time and freeze them!

NO ROOKIE IN #WORLDSERIES HISTORY HAS MORE STRIKEOUTS IN A SINGLE GAME THAN TREY YESAVAGE!

THURSDAY
John had an appointment and I did some administrivia before meeting him to get electronic visa photos.
Luckily the bus driver had taken the exit to Spadina, otherwise we would have been stuck as this streetcar was blocking Lake Shore. Cars were going around the back end of it to continue.

Royal York Hotel decked out in blue for the Blue Jays!

We are going to Vietnam and Thailand for 28 days!! Vietnam requires a visa.
We have been to both countries on a river cruise but that isn't the same. Most meals were in the boat and you just get a taste of a place. Click here for our river cruise.

Also we are going to different cities although we will be in Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok for a couple of days.

We spent the rest of a rainy day doing travel research.

FRIDAY
I went for a haircut on a miserable drab day. There weren't very many Halloween costumes about but plenty of Blue Jays outfits!

Waiting for our Jersey Mike's sub. The line was so long I ordered online and it was faster!

This was some kind of photo shoot set up in Union, I'm guessing  LA reporters????

Top of the RBC building.

I was going to do our visa paperwork but I received an e-mail from the tour company stating that they would do it! Bonus!

We ordered a Chromebook to take away with us instead of my large laptop. We got it set up and will test it out on the weekend.

John solved an annoying cell phone problem I was having uploading photos from both our phones after a software update.

We're ready!

Sorry for all the Blue Jays images, but some are just too good!

Weeeeellllll....One more game will decide!!

Dodgers Edge Blue Jays 3-1 in Game 6, Force World Series Game 7

COOKING

Saturday - leg of lamb sprouts roast potatoes mashed turnip and carrots with chimichurri

Tuesday -  leftovers
Wednesday - fish chowder finishing up what we had in the freezer.

WATCHING
BASEBALL

Flight or Fight s a 2025 action comedy film. It stars Josh Hartnett as a man who is recruited to identify and protect a wanted criminal aboard a commercial airline. This was a fun, silly movie, perfect for a Saturday afternoon.

We finished The Diplomat season 3 - what a ride!!

I'm watching an Australian series The Family Next Door as I cook. It is getting more intriguing.

READING

I read The Woman Who Lied, and I'm not lying when I say I got a little confused at one point as there are stories within stories. I thought I had the villain at the beginning but then kept changing my mind. It was a good read and I borrowed another of hers.
