April 2001 - Ballybunion Ireland

This was the first time we ever rented our accommodations at Seaside Cottages for a week online.
When looking for rental vacation properties overseas it is best to google "self-catering".

We had trouble locating the cottage so John asked for directions in a shop, something he hates to do because the irish accents can be hard to understand, especially in Kerry!!
We knew the name of the woman who was renting it, Deirdre.  When John pronounced it as Deer-dre (as on Coronation Street, a British TV show), he was quickly corrected as the shop owner stated that "in England they may say Deer-dre in Ireland we say Deer-dra". OK fine.

Anywho, we found it!

It was huge and more suited to a family. It had three bedrooms, a large kitchen and living room, master with en-suite and two other bedrooms and bathroom. The view out the kitchen window was towards the beach.

The beach and town were a three minute walk.

All that remains of the castle is this wall in the costal resort town of Ballybunion in Kerry.
Tomorrow I will post photos of the house we rented in Ballybunion.

April 2001 - Ballyheige Ireland
Ballyheigue, officially Ballyheige (Irish: Baile Uí Thaidhg), which translates in English as Tadhg's town, is a coastal village in County Kerry, Ireland. This is a scenic resort town.

The Cantillon family came to Ireland with the Stuarts and like all the settlers of that time they intermarried and settled into the Irish way of life. They built their long prominent thatched dwelling in a location overlooking Ballyheigue bay but not exactly in the same place as the present castle ruins, It is said by many that Thadhg Cantillon gave Ballyheigue (Baile Uí Thaidhg) its name, however according to other historical sources, this may not be true. The name Tadhg O'Connor of the O'Connor chieftan clan of Barrow is said to have preceded Tadhg Cantillion. In the sixteenth century their lands were confiscated by Elizabeth I and 'planted' by the Crosbie family.

The fact that the castle whose front wall and towers, despite years of neglect still stand today offers testimony to the building knowledge, ability and skill of the trades people of that time.
