August 2026 - St. John's NL click link

We found this at The Rooms in St. John's NL in August 2026. That post also includes a link to his memorial on the Irish Loop.

Ron Hynes (1950–2015) is widely regarded as one of Newfoundland and Labrador's greatest folk singer-songwriters, affectionately known as the "Man of a Thousand Songs". The link above will give you more info on this Canadian icon.

Last Week's Post - Day 1 and 2 in St. John's NL

SATURDAY Click here for our day 3

It was a gorgeous sunny day! We spent the afternoon with lunch at Quidi Vidi.

I made a couple more dinner reservations as it is hard to get in without one at some places.

SUNDAY Click here for our day 4
Outfit - One Word Sunday

We whiled away the morning before heading out.
A little cloudier that yesterday but perfect for walking around.

MONDAY Click here for our day 5

We had a boat tour for a few hours.

I think we've seen Rocky Horror Picture Show on stage a few times, definitely on NYE in New York City 2001, right after 9/11.

THURSDAY

We slept in this morning, but then we didn't go to bed until 1AM.
John used the simulator.
I did a quick run to Longo's to cover us over the weekend. I did get pork chops on sale as well as a small pork roast for the weekend. Bacon had $1 off so I grabbed one.
Bananas are always a good deal, we need to buy them more often.

Fanfest is taking place this weekend. No, I don't know any of the characters, but the costumes are fun.

Always busy, plus there was a Blue Jays game.

We unpacked most stuff and it went right into the laundry.

John is laughing his way through Ted Lasso. I finished (kitchen) Two Weeks in August (almost trashy, but has me at the 5th episode). Okay I admit it got kinda good.
We caught up on the latest episodes of Silo and Lucky.

FRIDAY

John golfed. I went shopping and found a sweater for fall that I love.

More Fan Expo.

READING

9 Books Inspired by Newfoundland and Labrador

This was all good plane/vacation reading!

I read Dark Game by Rachel Lynch, a new author, with a new female main character Kelly Porter #1.

The Parents' Association Chris Pavone. What the hell was this? I got all settled on our flight and boom this was over in a flash! It turned out to be a bonus scene from The Doorman!!!

The Babysitter Phoebe Morgan

The Girl Next Door Phoebe Morgan. Another author with very strong female characters, not necessarily good ones, but great reading.

The Doll House also Phoebe Morgan. I'm not loving this one as much so far.

St. John's NL - Day 7 St. John's to Toronto

 August 2026 - St. John's NL

Aug 26 Wednesday

Another sunny morning. I requested a late check-out 12:30, and we had breakfast. We left our bags at the hotel and strolled along Water St. no real plans.

Random photos.

Hotel lobby.

The Volendam primarily sails Canada & New England routes and epic transatlantic "Voyage of the Vikings" itineraries that connect North America with Europe.
Canada & New England Circle Itineraries
These cruises typically start or end in Boston or Montreal. They circle the Maritimes and Atlantic Canada, hitting stops such as:
Quebec & The St. Lawrence: Quebec City, Saguenay Fjord, Havre-Saint-Pierre, and Baie-Comeau
Newfoundland Stops: St. John's, Corner Brook, and St. Anthony
The Maritimes & New England: Charlottetown (PEI), Halifax (NS), and Boston (MA)
The standard passenger capacity of the Volendam is 1,432 guests based on double occupancy.

So it is quite a small ship.

We had already decided that lupper (lunch/dinner) would be mussels at Yellowbelly.

Red curry NL mussels.

On our stroll back, we stopped into the Alt Hotel, it is quite nice. It would be a good place to stay, right on the water and no hills! The Hop On Hop Off also starts and ends here.

Back to the hotel, pick up our luggage and call an Uber to the airport. Easy check-in and we headed to the lounge. Our flight was right on time at 8PM NL time. Dinner was served but we didn't bother, chicken or pasta, no thanks. We had really enjoyed our mussels.

Landed right on time at 10PM Toronto time, we gained 1.5 hours and we were in row 1, so first off!!! Our luggage took about fifteen minutes, there were 4 other flights on our luggage carousel.

We grabbed a limo home, it is a maze to find your Uber at this airport.
