2024 Road Trip - Day 1 Toronto to Fort Wayne

 March 11, 2024

Departure 8:45
Weather Sunny 0C/32F when we set out 14C/57F in Fort Wayne IN
Arrival      4:15
Province/States Ontario - Windsor/Detroit border crossing - Michigan - Indiana

Traffic wasn't bad getting out of Toronto except for the number of trucks. Luckily there is a HOV lane for a while on the QEW.

We stopped at the West Lorne travel plaza for a bio break and a stretch. Then gas at Tilbury $38 CDN.

We shopped at the duty free, used the bathroom and had lunch (sandwiches from home). Then a short wait at the border, we missed the NEXUS lane. In total that break was 45 minutes, not bad at all. There is an $11 CDN toll as you leave the border!

Detroit from bridge.

GPS took us on I-24 which was very quiet until we were about 10 minutes away from the hotel and we were down to one lane.

We kept commenting on how blue the water was in the lakes.
The culprit for the beautiful blue is the limestone! Limestone is composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and is white in color. As the river breaks down this rock into tiny crystals, these crystals will get mixed up into the water. When sunlight hits the tiny crystals, it will reflect that beautiful blue color.

Wyndham Garden

We checked in and our room was on the second floor and we had a loooong walk carrying all our stuff. Then the room was so dark with a dinky window. John went and asked for a better room. We got one on the first floor with a short walk to the lobby.

We went to the bar in the hotel, it serves bar food, that is it has a deep fryer. Tiny place, a couple of guys on business were fun to talk to. Drink and food portions were gigantic. We shared jalapeno poppers, pulled pork and popcorn shrimp with fries.

  2. ..."bio break", LOL, must remember that!
We´re far from free cannabis here.
Hmmm, Jerky! Ingo smuggled some in!
Interesting with the Limestone! And now I am hungry. Thank you for the trip!

    1. I had a boss that would say bio break. I also call in a pee break! We also use rest stop, pit stop, and a favourite "comfort break"?
