31 Days in Canada

In honour of CANADA DAY  I plan to post a daily image of Canada and a link to a random Canadian location we have visited.

Dawson City Yukon - random post

A Living Gold Rush Time Capsule

Largest City North of Seattle: During the 1898 peak of the gold rush, the population exploded to over 30,000–40,000 residents, briefly making it the largest city in Canada west of Winnipeg.

No Paved Roads: The streets are strictly dirt and gravel, and the sidewalks are elevated wooden boardwalks, maintaining its 1890s look.

Gold Dust Economy: Before banks opened in 1898, all goods were paid for in gold dust carried in caribou-skin pouches. It is one of the very few places left where some local merchants still accept gold dust as payment.

The "Paris of the North": It earned this nickname because gold-frenzied miners demanded luxury goods, fine dining, and grand entertainment in the middle of the wilderness.

Canada's First Casino: Dawson City is home to Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall, Canada’s oldest operating casino. It features three nightly vaudeville can-can shows.
