Luba's Coffee Boutique

Kamloops Indian Residential School was the largest in the residential system. Opened under Roman Catholic administration in 1890, the school had as many as 500 students when enrolment peaked in the 1950s.

In Canada, the Indian residential school system was a network of boarding schools for Indigenous peoples. The network was funded by the Canadian government's Department of Indian Affairs and administered by Christian churches. The school system was created to remove Indigenous children from the influence of their own culture and assimilate them into the dominant European-Canadian culture, "to kill the Indian in the child."

Slowly getting there, Saturday we were reporting 1,100 cases a day, a big drop from a month ago. On Wednesday The province confirmed the lowest single-day increase in new infections since mid-October.

Monday John golfed and I went downtown. City planters lining many streets.

Decorating the town in rainbow for June Pride Month. Alas, no parade again this year.

I sat at Osgoode Hall to have a sub, no indoor/outdoor dining as yet.

The flags weren't at half mast as yet, in honour of the 215 murdered indigenous children. The flags will remain at half mast for 9 days, one hour for each child.

Tuesday was Costco day, it is a full time job putting all that stuff away. Then it was popcorn and movies for the afternoon.

Wednesday John golfed and came across this little guy.

I found the condo herb garden available for use.

I grabbed a McChicken (don't judge me).

I sat across from here to eat my lunch and was struck by the contrast. If you zoom in on the fire station you will see the painted fire hydrant.

Another skyline contrast, the small Asian restaurant (LUXURY RESIDENCES COMING SOON), a ghost sign behind it "MOVING PACKING STORAGE" and then another condo.

The big banks love their PRIDE declarations.

Just more Yonge St. changing skyline.

Known as Halo Residences on Yonge, the 38 storey condominium project will come with a noteworthy restoration of the heritage 1871-built Fire Hall No.3’s clock tower, most recently associated with the St Charles Tavern.

Over on Church St.

Ryerson University’s namesake statue has been vandalized once again in the wake of the remains of 215 children being found at the site of a former residential school in British Columbia.

The statue of Egerton Ryerson has been doused in red paint and marked with graffiti referring to the tragic discovery announced last week.

Ryerson University has a huge downtown campus in Toronto.

Over at Nathan Phillips Square...not sure what her story is. She names the fees of two lawyers with their fees - Swartz and Achampong.

Old City Hall - click on Old City Hall in the labels/tags below post to see lots more of this amazing building.

Royal York Hotel proudly flying the rainbow flag.

Thursday rainy and foggy, perfect for staying home and doing chores.

I repotted some plants and cleaned the balcony in anticipation of a new rug I ordered.

Friday golf. I took the streetcar to Spadina and Dundas in Chinatown and then walked back.

Patios are working hard to be ready for  they are allowed to open.

A huge block on Front St. outside CBC was bumper to bumper filming trailers. Then at the bus stop there was a large crowd (no social distancing) of film crew and extras. I gathered from their tags that it was for "Sweater Vest"???? At the corner this was confirmed by this board.

Coming back on King St West in the heart of the Entertainment District, Mirvish is gearing up to reopen the theatres.

So quiet in David Pecaut Square with Roy Thomson Hall in front and the bank towers of the Financial District in the background.

An unusual sight in the square.

May and YTD crossword puzzle stats.  John is still leading.

Sunday my trusty Spanish chicken thighs with Irish soda bread.

Monday bbq chicken quarters and potato salad (homemade).

Tuesday short rib and lamb kidney slow cooker stew.

Wednesday garlic butter shrimp (need more garlic) and salad.

Thursday air fryer pork belly bites (oil, brown sugar, garlic, ginger), rice noodle with broccolini, mushrooms, onions in a mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, chili sauce, corn starch and water.

Friday steak and twice baked potatoes.
I also made raspberry chocolate ice cream.

New to us ✅ goji berries added to our granola. I also bought some sorghum flour as it is gluten free.

SOPHISTICATED SHAKERS

Well, this week's cocktail was an epic fail! John chose a Peach Cosmo, We had an ancient bottle of peach schnapps. John mixed them, we both took a couple of sips and said no way, Jose and they went down the drain as did the rest of the bottle of schnapps. It was just tooooooo sweet for us.

This recipe sounds much better!

WATCHING

After missing a couple of weeks of 2021 Masterchef Australia because this message appeared on Dailymotion after episode 26!

However, I finally found a new streaming option WatchTVSeries.si and am now caught up to episode 34!! I was so disappointed to see Tom go home and then come back and fail to win along with Eric for a chance at one of the two aprons but was pleased for Maya.

A friend recommended Hope Gap 2019 (Crave On Demand) so I watched and enjoyed it as I prepared Sunday dinner. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2019.

Tuesday at the Movies
No blockbusters this week.
Time of Death 2013 entertaining.
The Devil's in the Details 2013, while it was exciting made no sense at the end.

We watched the finale for Mare of Easttown.
We also finally saw the last episode of Kim's Convenience, so sad to see it go.
I loved every one of these characters!

The fifth and final season arrived on Netflix internationally on Wednesday.

The Invisible Man 2020 with Elizabeth Moss was such a strong and vulnerable character at the same time. It was easy to understand why everyone thought she was the crazy one.

Friday Snowden 2016 biological thriller led us to read more.

BOOKS

NOW magazine (free alternative weekly newspaper and online publication)  14 Best Books Summer 2021. None of these were available at the library so I tagged them in Goodreads.

On my laptop - The Edible Balcony looking for ideas and I got some. I will get some perennial grasses and perhaps a bamboo.
So odd the book never used an apostrophe in contractions i.e. dont wouldnt theyre....very weird. Proofreaders are needed!

Started The Bad Muslim Discount and Interior Chinatown both funny and sad at the same time.

  1. Without going into much detail, the discovery of so many bodies was rather shocking. If there weren't any apostrophes used at all in such words, maybe it was deliberate. But why...

    1. There were other errors in the book, just bad proofing or typesetting.

  2. It's horrifying to hear about the finding of the indigenous children's bodies. We can never forget the past, I think, especially the awful parts. It's too easy for these to happen again.

I'm very glad the Covid numbers are dropping there. It's too bad the pride celebration could not take place.

The Peach Cosmo looks like it is your first fail. We are all ready here to try the Jalapeno Margarita this afternoon when my sister and her husband come over.

I'm eager to hear what you think about Bad Muslim Discount.

  3. Such horrible news about the discovery of the bodies. I listened to a nonfiction book last month by a therapist that dealt with five cases of abuse and the therapies. It's called Good Morning, Monster and one of the patients was taken from his family at a young age and forced into one of those schools. It was a tough story, but his resiliency was inspirational.

The parmesan crusted haddock sounds delicious... bet I could make it in the air fryer. Will try it this week. Too bad about the cocktail though.

I've got The Bad Muslim Discount on hold at the library... not sure when I'll get it. As always, I enjoy your photos!

    1. Thanks for that book recommendation.
Why didn't I put the haddock in the air fryer?? I'm sure it would work.
