Volcano National Park and Village

After John golfed last Monday we decided to drive to Volcano Village for lunch at Kilauea Lodge. I had to redeem my selection after our horrible meal at the Hawaiian BBQ chain L&L in Pahoa.

We have been to the Volcano National Park several times in the past, however we had not gone when we were last here in 2009.
Things have really changed. Here is an amazing interactive map of the park area.
This map also shows where we had our Mauna Loa adventure.
There are a lot more areas blocked off to traffic due the the dangers from the sulfuric gases that are escaping.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has issued a press release concerning the closure of trails and pullouts along Crater Rim Drive.  Elevated levels of sulfur dioxide gas in the Kilauea summit area have prompted the following closures:
  • Crater Rim Drive from Jaggar Museum to Chain of Craters Road will be opened for drive through visitation only, no parking or stopping allowed at any pullouts, parking areas or shoulders.
  • Crater Rim Trail from Jaggar Museum to Chain of Craters will be closed.
  • All trails leading to the summit caldera of Kilauea are closed.
Elevated volcanic gas levels are dangerous to everyone. In these areas, do not stop and do not leave your car. Drive by with car windows rolled up and use air conditioning in “recirculation” mode.

  1. Great photo Jake. Love the red and blue of the junk boat. Is that right or is it a catamaran? I always head to the Caribbean. I should go to Hawaii too shouldn't I?
