Tuesday we ventured into New Bern to check out this town named after Bern, Switzerland. Bern is bear in Swiss and the town emblem is a bear and bears predominate throughout the town.
First stop was lunch at the Morgan's Tavern and Grill which has the feel of an authentic, delightful old inn with nooks and crannies throughout.
We were escorted to our table by a charming, elderly Southern gentleman. Our server was also charming. I ordered the tuna (ahi style) salad served with cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, and apple wood bacon on a bed of mixed greens and a wasabi creamy vinaigrette served with a luscious warm croissant.
It was absolutely delicious. DH opted for the club sandwich on sourdough with a salad and a raspberry vinaigrette.
Next stop was Tryon Palace - Royal Governor William Tryon and his family brought architect John Hawks from London to design and build the Georgian-style structure. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace served as the first permanent capitol of North Carolina and home to the Tryon family.

Our ticket also included the Carolina History Museum, since it was 4:30 PM and it closes at 5 PM we headed to the Pepsi Interactive display. This is very cute and children would delight in it. You are given a coloured card and it is "activated" to allow you to travel back in history to 1835. You are then put into the time capsule which takes you backwards with a countdown of historical photos back to that year. You are then greeted on the "other side" by a guide who explains that firstly the mayor will welcome you at the town tower clock and you are then free to wander the town. Since we were the only people we stopped into the store where we had fun playing along. The store owner is on a monitor and requests that you help find items for shoppers by pressing a button beside the item he names, the "shopping list items" are then displayed on an interactive table (screen) in the middle of the room as you collect them.
We then moved to the kitchen to "help" Cook out using the same methods as above.
After that we wandered through town and stopped at the birthplace of Pepsi.
