I'm linking up at Monday Mural
January 2025 - Texarkana, AR
We stopped in Texarkana on our winter 2025 trip south.
Texarkana is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas, on the southwest border of the state. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 29,387. It is the twin city of Texarkana, Texas, located just across the state line. The city was founded at a railroad intersection on December 8, 1873, and was incorporated in Arkansas on August 10, 1880. Texarkana and its Texas counterpart are the principal cities of the Texarkana metropolitan area, which in 2021 was ranked 289th in the United States with a population of 147,174, according to the United States Census Bureau.

A large mural depicts the life and accomplishments of native son and Pulitzer Prize winning composer Scott Joplin, "The Father of Ragtime Music." While attending the Orr School in Texarkana, Joplin formulated many of his most successful ideas and compositions. He became famous for "The Entertainer," written in 1902, which was introduced to a whole new generation when used in the 1973 movie “The Sting.” His sophisticated piano compositions have only recently begun to be fully appreciated, and as a result, many revivals of his works have been staged and recorded.
The Entertainer
Wonderful murals, must be great if you live there and be proud of it. And nice to know The Entertainer comes from there. I could play it on our original Steinweg-Piano that came from my hometown (later Steinweg re-named himself to Steinway and went to America - fun, how small the world is after all!).
ReplyDeleteThank you for the memory, sadly I cannot play anymore (well, the neighbors sure are thankful ;-)...)
...Jackie, you have found some wonderful murals.
ReplyDeleteWonderful murals all of them. It's nice for a small town to be able to claim someone famous was born there. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Jackie.
ReplyDeleteGood murals.
